The Medieval Banquet: Step Back in Time!

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

BOOK TOUR 35 MEDIEVAL BANQUET

Enjoy a really unusual, fun night out with a four course meal, unlimited drink (during the meal) and court jesters and King Henry VIII’s Royal entertainers!

DESCRIPTION

Every evening except Monday (closed 24, 25 & 26 December), you can go back in time to be part of this Medieval Banquet in the lovely vaulted cellars of the Ivory House. Make your own way to this historic part of London in St Katherine’s Dock which is in the shadow of Tower Bridge. It is a wonderful venue and there is no reason why, you can’t step outside and really appreciate the nightime glory of this wonderful bridge. Built in 1894, the Bridge was designed by Horace Jones in collaboration with John Wolfe Barry. It was constructed after the City of London Corporation acknowledged the densly populated East End of London was coming to a standstill as there were no bridges to the East of London Bridge. Journeys to and from that part of London were literally being delayed by hours!

If the history of the venue doesn’t interest you, the food is sure to! Included in the price is a wonderful four course banquet, served medieval style with serving wenches. You will be entertained by amongst other things, duelling Knights, Magic and traditional music. Accompanying your meal (until dessert is served) is free flowing beer and wine!

After the meal there is music and dancing till late.

Duration of this tour is approximately 3 hours and the dress code is smart/casual. No jeans or trainers.

Your nearest tube to the Medieval Banquet venue is Tower Hill Station.

Tour Description

The day begins with a panoramic tour of London’s West End.  This will give you the chance to take some amazing photo shots of Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Downing Street, the London home of the British Prime Minister, famous Trafalgar Square and the statue of Lord Nelson, Pall Mall and so much more.

The panoramic tour will also take in Westminster Abbey – a large, mainly Gothic church which is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for British monarchs.

You will alight at Buckingham Palace to view the Changing of the Guard. This grand occasion takes place in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace and you will witness the changing of the Old Guard to the New Guard accompanied by no fewer than 35 musicians.  A truly wonderful ceremony.

After lunch and with time permitting, you will be able to enjoy a short walking tour of Covent Garden.   This area is dominated by shopping, street performers and entertainment facilities.

No London tour would be complete without a trip to the City or Square Mile as it is often referred because it is almost exactly one square mile in area.  Here you shall learn about the Great Fire of 1666 which destroyed four-fifths of the City!  You will also see the Bank of England and Mansion House, the home of the Lord Mayor.

An exclusive feature of this tour is entry into Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece, St.  Paul’s Cathedral (also the venue for the marriage of the late Diana Princess of Wales to Prince Charles.)  The old St. Paul’s was gutted by the Great Fire of London and the existing cathedral was completed on 20 October 1708.  During your visit you will also have entry to the Quire to see the beautiful mosaics.  (Not normally open to the General Public.)

Another highlight of this fabulous London tour is entry to the Tower of London and the Crown Jewels.  The tower’s primary function was a fortress, a royal palace, and a prison (particularly for high status and royal prisoners, such as Queen Elizabeth I. It has also served as a place of execution and torture, an armoury, a treasury, a zoo, the Royal Mint and since 1303, the home of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.

To finish off this London tour in style, we take you on a wonderful river cruise along the Thames.

Enjoy a wonderful tour of London that takes in all of the major attractions, including the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Downing Street where Britain’s Prime Minsister resides, Trafalgar Square and much more. The tour finishes at Buckingham Palace where you get to see the famous Changing of the Guard of the Household Division which is probably one of the UK’s biggest touriest attractions. The Guards are not just ceremonial but serving soldiers, some of the most skilled soldiers in the British Army.

The Household Division is made up of seven regiments; the Cavalry Regiment, ‘The Life Guards’ and ‘The Blues and Royal’s and five foot Guards, ‘The Grenadier Guards’, ‘The Coldstream Guards’, ‘The Scots Guards’, ‘The Irish Guards’ and ‘The Welsh Guards’.

It is a spectacular ceremony, full of colour and pomp and seeped in tradition. And don’t worry about trying to get photos during the ceremony as the best time is either before or after at various locations including Wellington Barracks (just after). How about getting photographed with one of the Guards? Go to St James’ Palace, walk past the courtyard and turn the corner into Pall Mall and you can stand next to the solitary Guard!

At the Household Cavalry Museum, get to meet a Trooper from the Household Guards and feel free to ask any questions. NB On Sundays, meeting the Tropper is subject to Guard Change.

Finally get to see inside Buckingham Palace which has been the official home to British Sovereigns since 1837. You will be allowed to visit its’ 19 Staterooms which are used by the Queen to entertain on auspicious or official occasions. Get to see the Throne Room which is where the Queen presides ‘in Majesty’ on such occasions as awarding high honours, or to grant an audience or to hold council. You can also see the stunning Ballroom which is the largest multi purpose room in Buckingham Palace and is used by the Queen for State Banquets.
